Primary 6 pupils take part in DCU Research Project

16th Jun 2017

The P6 pupils took part in a physical literacy study titled “Moving Well-Being Well”. This study is being carried out by Dublin City University. The study aims to gather information on the physical literacy levels of students in the school as well as information on other factors such as body composition measurements, neuro-cognitive functioning, fitness levels and academic performance. There is increasing evidence to show that physical inactivity in childhood leads to health problems later in adolescence and adulthood. Physical literacy as an outcome of PE and school ethos provide children and young people, of all abilities and dispositions, with the foundations on which to build a lifelong commitment and enjoyment of physical activity. The project will assess students around the country with a view to better understand the relationship between physical literacy, health related fitness, wellbeing and physical activity This will lead to better informed physical activity programmes that will improve the health of all children and adolescents, thus adults. At the end of the day, 5 boys and 5 girls were randomly selected to wear a Pedometer Tracking device for one week. This will record their daily activity over the week. The 10 selected pupils can be seen with the three facilitators from the University.
